By the Middle Ages, Valentine’s Day had become linked to love and romance and this is when the French started to influence the tradition. Many people link Valentine's Day with France for mainly two reasons.

In both England and France, birds pair off and mate 'in the middle of February'. Since February 14 is exactly the middle of February, it is thought that people began celebrating this day as the special day for lovers because of this association with 'love' in nature.

The first Valentine's Day card (carte d'amities) is said to have been written by the young French Duke of Orleans to his wife from his imprisonment in the Tower of London. The greeting that was written in 1415 is part of the manuscript collection at the British Library in London.
